Second 59th Street Bridge Accident Leaves Woman Dead, and New York Auto Accident Lawyer, David Perecman, Calling for More Safety Precautions
A female passenger dies in an auto accident at the same spot a man died less than two weeks ago.
NEW YORK, NY, April 17, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- A second car in nine days careened off the 59th Street Bridge exit ramp in Long Island City and smashed into a storefront. The car accident in New York left a woman dead from severe head trauma.
New York auto accident lawyer David Perecman, founder of the New York auto accident law firm The Perecman Firm, notes that the car accident happened on the exact spot where the earlier, and similar, auto accident occurred. Both cars even crashed into the same two storefronts.
"It is impossible to avoid every dangerous exit ramp or completely eliminate the possibility of car accidents. Nonetheless, it is the responsibility of New York City to lower the risks when a danger becomes obvious. Danger should have been obvious after the first auto accident," said New York auto accident lawyer Perecman.
Police said a man lost control of his Volkswagen Jetta around 4 a.m. Wednesday while exiting the Queens bound ramp of the Queensboro Bridge. The car crashed into a storefront, leaving the car's 40-year-old female passenger with serious head injuries which she later died from.
The driver, a 39-year-old man, is in stable condition following the auto accident in New York. He was arrested at the scene and charges are pending.
Last Monday, a Volkswagen failed to make the sharp-right turn and flew off the exit roadway, striking and killing a pedestrian on the sidewalk. The 35-year old driver of the car lost his arm in the auto accident.
Apparently, speed was a factor in both fatal car accidents.
Neighbors told the New York Post that the exit ramp had been renovated recently with the intention to increase pedestrian safety. But they said the changes have created unintentional chaos, by making the ramp harder for drivers to see. Barriers from an ongoing road-construction project are also disrupting traffic flows on the ramp.
"No traffic laws can protect all motorists from themselves, but people need to be made as safe as possible. The ramp as it is now is not just a danger to drivers who speed, but to innocent pedestrians, passengers and people in the stores," said New York auto accident lawyer Perecman.
According to a City Department of Transportation spokesman, the Department of Transportation is adding signs to remind motorists of the bridge's 30-mph speed limit and will also install rumble strips and 20-mph signs to the many curve-warning signs already posted along the off-ramp.
Concrete barriers were placed in front of the businesses on Queens Plaza South that had been hit in both vehicle crashes.
"It's good that the DOT did this, but for the two people who died, this is too late," commented Perecman, a New York auto accident lawyer who has been practicing in New York for over 30 years.
A few years ago Perecman settled an auto accident case for $1,2500,000 for a woman passenger who injured her spine in a car accident in New York.
